In the first half, Tom explains the three year cycle of readings on Sunday and the choice of passages to be included was the result of the contributions of scripture scholars from around the world, and of experts with Pastoral experience. The reason both were needed becomes clear in the second half of the talk in which Tom explains the formation and writing of the Gospels. Using examples of differences between the way Gospel writers wrote about the same incidents to take into account the cultural differences of their audience, Tom poses the question: how do we take into account the realties of our day to understand and apply the teachings and life of Jesus to our lives?
